In her lifetime Clara Brown embodied the principles of entrepreneurship, leadership, and risk-taking. As a freed slave, she travelled from Virginia to Colorado, becoming one of the first African-American women to settle in Colorado. There she opened numerous businesses and gained a reputation for community care. Her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for improving the world around her represents all the Academy stands for.
